FOOD: Save your stomach

Ilena Earl, Team Director, Chad Deaton, Swim Director

SIGS SPORTSPLEX

TYPE OF BUSINESS: SIGS is a 44,000 sq ft building complete with gymnastics and cheerleading training equipment and classes. The facility also holds a swimming pool heated at 86 degrees, year-round.

HOW TO WARM UP: SIGS offers swim classes for all ages and experience levels, including parent and tot classes and level six for those interested in competitive teams. Aquatic aerobics are also available. Deaton: “It’s great exercise and the pool is heated.”

Earl: “There’s no reason not to get wet this winter. We’re the spot to get hot!”

Mark Bliss, Owner,

BLISS TRAVEL INC., New Albany

TYPE OF BUSINESS: Bliss Travel is a family owned, full-service travel agency that has been serving Southern Indiana for 23 years.

HOW TO WARM UP: If Southern Indiana is indeed too cold, a cruise or vacation to the Caribbean, Mexico or Jamaica might be in order. “The deals are galore the first part of January because it’s right after the Holidays. After New Year’s is when everything jumps down in price.” He added that Cancun is a good place for bargains; “their arms are open saying please come see us. The deals are great, so it’s an opportunity for anyone looking for economical destination to keep out of the cold weather.” Cruises are also hot right now and recently, Bliss sold a January three night cruise for $175 plus airfare.

Jan Burkhart, Owner,

JAN’S SEWING THINGS, New Albany

TYPE OF BUSINESS: Jan began sewing 15 years-ago and opened her store to provide materials for those who sew, knit or crochet. While she does make a number of quilts, her specialty is making bedspreads.

HOW TO WARM UP: To add extra warmth at home, make a quilt. “Depending on the size, they can have it (quilt) done. Some small quilts you can do in a day. Some four-six time of sewing it and making it to get there?” For an even warmer quilt, Burkhart suggests heavier poly batting instead of cotton. For those new to quilting, Burkhart works with people of all levels of experience and she will be offering classes in March, but she welcomes anyone to contact her for private instruction.
