Bread and Breakfast rises in downtown New Albany

Sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, specialty breads offered at store

NEW ALBANY — Featuring sticky buns, cinnamon rolls and an assortment of specialty breads, a new bakery is hot out of the oven in New Albany.

Bread and Breakfast opened in November at 157 E. Main St. in a nearly century old building that most recently housed attorney Larry Schad’s law office.

The bakery is owned and operated by Laura Buckingham, who began selling her homemade bread at a stand off U.S. 150 a few years ago.

Buckingham — a former member of the U.S. Marines who is close to completing her second degree at the University of Louisville — gained notoriety through her grassroots efforts.

She frequently sold her baked goods at area farmers markets, and she has incorporated those experiences and relationships into her new business.

Buckingham only buys products and ingredients from local vendors and farmers for Bread and Breakfast. Located about 60 miles away, Midway, Ky., is the furthest place from New Albany where Buckingham purchases baking goods and supplies for her business.

As part of the Anthropology program at U of L, Buckingham is majoring in, she has prepared a detailed study of the local food economy.

One portion of that study specifically focused on farmers and the issues they face including being approved for permits and dealing with health department inspections.

Buckingham discovered how beneficial supporting local businesses, farmers and vendors can be, and said her studies have materialized in the shaping of Bread and Breakfast.

“I know the farmers — I know they put their money right back into the local community,”  Buckingham said.

Coffee, eggs, flour and honey — the list goes on as to the products purchased locally that Buckingham uses to bake her goods.  

Becoming a mother also influenced Buckingham’s adoration for local ingredients. When she was pregnant with her son, Buckingham said she became obsessed with eating natural and healthy products.

Motherhood also pushed Buckingham to bake more, and her popularity has risen like a loaf of bread in an oven.

Buckingham’s roadside stand became so popular that customers would line up before it even opened to pickup pre-orders and buy baked goods.

Now with a store, she still sells her products at local farmers markets.

“I never thought I would grow into a brick and mortar,” Buckingham said. “But here we are, and hopefully here we stay.”

Buckingham has received an outpouring of support from friends and family. She said her mother, Debra Word, has been a great friend and mentor through the process of starting her business.

Other friends and family members have volunteered their time to help spruce up part of the store building, help with baking or even operate the cash register when business is booming.

The bakery also received a sizable financial contribution courtesy of donations made through

Bread and Breakfast garnered $7,000 in donations through Kickstarter, and Buckingham said the money will be used to purchase an artisan oven that will allow the business to bake tough crust bread.

“I was really emotional for a few days,” Buckingham said of the donations. “I was thinking ‘how can people be this generous?’”

Bread and Breakfast accepts pre-orders and will bake custom goods for special occasions. Buckingham hopes to start a downtown delivery service in the spring, but added the business is moving along “one bite at a time” to foster sustainable growth.

Menu items include cheese paninis with toppings such as bacon, pepperoni or spinach. Other items include strata, bacon cinnamon rolls and cranberry scones.
