Treat yourself to a trio of new eateries in Jeffersonville

3 new food stops opening in city

JEFFERSONVILLE — A trio of new restaurants have taken root in Jeffersonville, opening within a month of one another. All three are either regional or national chains, and offer a variety of food and drinks.

Here’s a look at what’s open or soon will be:

The city’s only Cajun-style restaurant, J. Gumbo’s opened two weeks ago at 103 Quartermaster Court.

Owner and manager Missy Bak said the restaurant is in the former Quad Cafe meeting room that wasn’t being used much.

“It’s 800 square feet that we weren’t making any money on, so we decided to do something easy and fast,” Bak said.

J. Gumbo’s is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from until 10 p.m. The restaurant features bowls, po’ boys and appetizers.

The Jeffersonville location is connected to Quad Cafe, which has a full bar, and guests can buy drinks next door while enjoying food from J. Gumbos in either store.

Bak said the restaurant, which is located near many other businesses as well as Jeffersonville City Hall, is a good in-between eatery for those who don’t have a lot of time.

“It’s really good fresh gourmet food that is served fast, so you kind of get the best of both worlds if you’re in a hurry or don’t feel like going to a sit-down restaurant,” she said.

Bak said that J. Gumbo’s — which is based in Louisville and has locations in 11 states — is hiring. For more information, visit

Another “in-between” restaurant locating in Jeffersonville is Culver’s, opening Monday, March 10, at 1555 Veterans Parkway.

The restaurant owners also run the Corydon location, which has been open for about 10 years, said co-owner Frank Spanopoulos. He said that Rob Waiz, the city’s economic redevelopment director, sold them on adding a Jeffersonville store.

“The time was right,” Spanopoulos said.

Culver’s hours will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day of the week. The Jeffersonville location will have slightly higher prices to cover the higher quality ingredients, such as humanely raised chicken.

“Things are definitely a step above of what people are accustomed to for fast food,” he said.

Other than its food, Spanopoulos said Culver’s also prides itself on its service.

“I just think that we really do a good job of not just serving food but of giving an experience when people come out to dine,” he said.

Although Culver’s — which features ButterBurgers, sandwiches, fried chicken and ice cream — has already hired 50 employees, Spanopoulos said he is “always looking for good people.”

Jeffersonville’s first Dunkin’ Donuts location has opened at 2711 E. 10th Street, near Jeffersonville High School.

Celebrating its grand opening this past Saturday, the store has operating hours from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week and until 10 p.m. on weekends.

Owner Tasha Morris said the newest store on East 10th Street is just one of as many as 15 stores to open in the greater Louisville area in the next eight years.

“We kind of liked the small town feel of it,” Morris said of the new location. “We try really hard to give a product that the customers are going to enjoy.”

She said the most recently opened Dunkin’ Donuts will have more regulated menu offerings. This new location is hiring, she said. The Massachusetts-based chain features coffee, other hot and cold beverages, doughnuts and other baked goods and sandwiches.
