Big Four Burgers eyeing more in downtown New Albany

Popular Jeffersonville restaurant set to open New Albany location

NEW ALBANY — Despite all the dining options in downtown New Albany, Matt McMahan believes there’s a void waiting to be filled, and he plans on seizing the opportunity this fall.

McMahan announced Wednesday he will expand Big Four Burgers + Beer by opening a New Albany establishment. McMahan anticipates a location will be announced in early April, but confirmed the spot will be downtown.

“Downtown New Albany is booming right now with the restaurant end of it, and I just feel there’s a huge need for a gourmet burger place in downtown,” he said.

In December, Big Four Burgers opened at 134 Spring St. in downtown Jeffersonville.

Named after the Big Four pedestrian and cycling bridge, the fact the span remains closed hasn’t hampered the success of the Jeffersonville restaurant.

“It’s been phenomenal,” McMahan said. “We anticipated that bridge, but it has been so overwhelmingly busy without the bridge open.”

There was thought of naming the New Albany location after the K&I Bridge — which officials are pushing to have reopened for pedestrian use — but McMahan said the management team elected to keep the Big Four name to coincide with the Jeffersonville spot.

In addition to gourmet burgers, McMahan said the New Albany location will have an emphasis on craft beer.

McMahan owns several businesses in Southern Indiana, including The Irish Exit, which is located at 207 E. Main St.

Though he said Big Four Burgers may open at one of the properties he already owns, McMahan said The Irish Exit will remain in business. McMahan garnered a facade grant from the New Albany Urban Enterprise Association last year for The Irish Exit, and McMahan said improvements to the building are planned.

As for Big Four Burgers, McMahan said the goal is to open the New Albany location by late fall. For more information, visit the website
