Police Merit Commission meeting set in Jeffersonville

Road closures and detours on the way

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville Board of Public Works set a meeting to replace a Police Merit Commission member that resigned shortly after the mayor’s two appointments were removed from the commission.

The police members voting would be replacing the police department membership’s Democratic appointment to the board, Stuart Robertson.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore removed Dennis Henry and Jeff Esarey — his appointments to the board — on Sept. 25 because he said he did not like the direction the board was going. He said, following the removal of his board appointments, that if the police merit board went forward with a plan to promote four people to lieutenant positions, it would create a top-heavy organization and create a financial crisis for the city.

The two men were replaced by Jim Hall, a retired county police officer, and Jeremy Snelling, a Clark County Court bailiff.

Corporation Attorney Tom Lowe explained that by Indiana Code, the board of public works has to set the meeting date, time and place. However, the board will have no hand in picking the new member to the police merit commission.

“Only active members of the police force can attend that meeting,” he said.

Lowe also offered rules for the police membership appointments to the police merit commission, which were adopted for the meting.

“These rules were written [so] they would be valid, not only for this meeting, but any future openings on the merit commission that are appointed by the police department membership,” he said.

Lowe added the same rules would also be used for the Fire Merit Commission should an opening occur.

The meeting for the vote was set for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in City Council Chambers at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court. Nominations are to be sent to the Jeffersonville Clerk’s office in sealed bids by 9:30 a.m. Oct. 17.

The remaining members of the police merit commission are held by Bonnie Deppert, a police department appointment, and Clay “Beany” Smith, a Jeffersonville City Council appointment.
