Grab a cookie, take a stroll in Jeffersonville

Downtown event designed to make memories

JEFFERSONVILLE — There’s nothing like stepping into grandma’s kitchen on a cold wintery day and taking a bite out of a warm, soft, sweet cookie fresh from the oven.

For the third year in a row more than 20 businesses in historic downtown Jeffersonville will be a stand-in for grandma’s kitchen.

Jeffersonville Main Street Inc., the Downtown Jeffersonville Merchants Association, with support from the Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Association, are hosting the city’s third annual Holiday Cookie Stroll from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The event allows ticket-buyers to stroll from shop to shop in Jeffersonville’s historic and collect a cookie from the participating shops as a way to showcase both the locally-owned businesses downtown and the progress taking place in the district, according to a press release.

“Events such as the cookie stroll are a great opportunity to familiarize the public with the wide variety of businesses in Jeffersonville,” said Jay Ellis, executive director of Jeffersonville Main Street. “At the same time it allows people to create holiday memories.”

The cookie stroll is the latest in a series of downtown events that are designed to highlight local businesses. The holiday season is just as important to the small shop owners as it is to the big box stores, Ellis said.

“We feel like part of our roll with Jeffersonville Main Street is to help the businesses and inform people to what is offered downtown,” he said.

What downtown is offering is a unique mix of long-time shops as well as some newcomers to the area.

Along with the events designed to showcase local business, events like the cookie stroll and the ice rink open downtown help organizers bring a nostalgic holiday feel to Jeffersonville and create holiday memories for local residents.

“I think those things help people connect with their community,” Ellis said. “[And] I think downtown provides that perfect showcase.”

During the cookie stroll The Clipper will be offering photos with Santa Claus — pets are welcome. VIP Quality Awards will also be hosting a meet the artist event during the cookie stroll and Angel Tree ornaments benefiting the J.B. Ogle Animal Shelter will be available at Perkfection.

It’s not just the business that will be local at the cookie stroll, so will the cookies. Through the city’s Urban Enterprise Zone, cookies will be provided by Adrienne and Co. Bakery and Cafe, Jeff’s Bakery, Sweets by Morgan, Chardeau’s Catering and Sullivan University.

Last year, the 250 tickets available for the event sold out. This year organizers have made another 100 tickets available. The tickets are $3 per person and are available at Schimpff's Confectionery, Sugar Maples Antiques and Choices Boutique. Participants must take their ticket to each shop and get it stamped to receive their cookie.
