All booked up: Grant helps Henryville school replace library books

HENRYVILLE — A bookless library is one of the loose ends yet to be tied up for the Henryville schools, but a donation will help fill some shelves.

A $15,000 grant from Beyond Words: The Dollar General School Library Relief fund was given to the schools to help them get books after tornadoes destroyed much of the school March 2.

The school’s media center and library suffered a lot of damage, with the roof ripped off and steel beams exposed.

In a news release, Sally Riggs, media specialist at the school, said the grant will allow the school to also purchase some e-readers after 20,000 books were blown away.

“Students can read downloaded e-books anywhere, anytime, regardless of the state of affairs in the school,” Riggs said. “Writing such a valuable resource into our current disaster preparedness policy will enable us to carry on in a whole new capacity under conditions that would keep school from meeting traditionally.”

Denine Torr, Dollar General’s director of community initiatives, said in a news release that the grant will help with revitalizing the school’s library.

“As part of Dollar General’s commitment to education, we want to ensure that children have access to books,”  Torr said. “Through the Beyond Words grant program, we’re proud to help the Henryville library rebuild and restore the limitless world of reading to students.”

To qualify for the grant, applicants must have a Dollar General store, distribution center or corporate office within 20 miles and represent a school that serves students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, as well as have suffered a hardship due to a natural disaster, fire or act of terrorism as recognized by the federal government.
