Man wanted in Georgia assault arrested in New Albany

State police: Second suspect may also be hiding in Floyd County

A 30-year-old man wanted out of Georgia for a drug-related assault on Tuesday was captured at a New Albany home Wednesday afternoon.

Another suspect in the case is still on the loose and possibly in Southern Indiana, police say.

The Indiana State Police arrested Sly Douglas Norman after they received a tip he was in the 2400 block of E. Market Street. He was arrested without incident.

Chazaray M. Jones, who is from Clarksville, is also wanted for questioning out of Sumter County, Ga. ISP officers continue to search for him.

Police say the two men were involved in a drug transaction in Andersonville, Ga., at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The incident turned into a robbery and a kidnapping and assault, according to a press release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Two people were hospitalized from the assault. Two people from Georgia were also arrested in relation to the incident.

Police believe the two New Albany men left Georgia in a white Ford Excursion that possibly has an Indiana license plate. That vehicle has not been recovered.

“We have arrested a man believed to be involved in an attempted robbery with an AK-47,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said. “He is being transported down to the Floyd County Jail. … We are looking for another man.”

Police say Norman has connections to Lexington, Ky., and was staying with an ex-girlfriend in New Albany on East Market Street in New Albany.

Goodin said police surrounded the residence for several hours before they arrested Norman. Police also searched numerous other locations in Clark and Floyd counties on Wednesday. The gun was never recovered, and ISP believes Jones may have it in his possession.

“Georgia authorities contacted us and said, ‘We want them really bad,’” Goodin said.

Norman has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault in Georgia, Goodin said. He has been charged in Floyd County with possession of marijuana under 30 grams. He will likely be extradited to Georgia.

Jones is 20 years old and is described as a black male, 6-feet tall and 135 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. His last known address was 48 Village Drive in New Albany.

Anyone who knows where Jones is hiding should call 1-800-872-6743 or 812-246-2509 or dial 911.
