Group to walk for health care

A van full of doctors from Oregon will be joined by local residents Tuesday night to advance the cause of Medicare for all ages.

The public is invited to the Indiana side of the Clark Memorial Bridge to participate in the Medicare-For-All Bridge walk. The Oregon group, calling themselves the Mad as Hell Doctors, left Portland earlier this month on a 27-city tour that will end in Washington, D.C.

The walk will begin with a kickoff welcome by Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan. The doctors also will speak briefly before candles are lit and the walk begins across the bridge to Main Street in Louisville, a press release says.

The event is also meant to memorialize “the thousands of people who die each year for lack of health care access.”

The group of doctors support a single-payer health care plan.

Work, lane reductions coming to I-65

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced the beginning of a major construction project to repair the pavement on Interstate 65 in Jefferson County.

The $28.7 million project — “Revive 65” — involves the replacement of concrete pavement with asphalt on the 3-mile section of interstate between Fern Valley Road and Interstate 264, also called the Watterson Expressway. It is among a dozen road and bridge projects, totaling more than $195 million, under way or planned for the Louisville area.

To complete Revive 65 as quickly as possible, contractors will work 24 hours a day for 16 days in each direction. Work is scheduled to begin Monday on the northbound lanes, with lane closures starting at 8 p.m.

The section of I-65 that normally is five lanes wide on each side will be reduced to three lanes in each direction during construction. In the northern section of the project near the Watterson, where each side of I-65 normally is three lanes wide, traffic will be reduced to two lanes in each direction during construction. The interstate will not be closed, but Kentucky Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said in a news release that motorists are advised to avoid the construction area.
