American Commercial Lines buys new barges

Company mum on why vessels not built by Jeffboat

JEFFERSONVILLE — American Commercial Lines Inc. announced it has purchased eight 20,000 barrel capacity tank barges from SeaRiver Maritime Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

American Commercial Lines operates the nation’s second largest tank barge fleet and the third largest dry cargo fleet, and with the purchase ACL will expand its fleet to 325 tank barges, according to an ACL press release. The barges are used to transport liquid cargoes, including chemicals, petroleum and renewable fuels.

“This expansion of our fleet enables us to meet shippers’ needs for mid-range capacity tank barges and underscores ACL’s long-term commitment to our liquids business,” said ACL’s Vice President of Liquid Sales Dan Jaworski, in the release. “As an added benefit, these tank barges were built by Jeffboat, adding quality, as well as capacity, to our liquids fleet.”

ACL Spokeswoman Kim Durbin said in addition to the 20,000 barrel capacity boats being purchased, the company’s fleet includes 30,000 and 15,000 barrel capacity barges.

“It really just provides an opportunity to meet some shippers’ needs that we did not have available before,” she said.

Durbin would not divulge what the company paid for the barges or why new barges weren’t manufactured by Jeffboat, and said only that the purchase is part of the company’s strategic growth plan.

“ACL is focused on strategic growth of our liquids business, and the addition of the 20,000 barrel capacity tank barges to our fleet provides the potential for entry into new markets,” said ACL Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Service Bob Blocker in the press release.
