Ivy Tech Southern Indiana named Tree Campus USA

SELLERSBURG —

The Arbor Day Foundation recently notified Ivy Tech Community College Southern Indiana that it was awarded Tree Campus USA status.

Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Toyota helped launch the program and continues its generous financial support this year.

Ivy Tech Southern Indiana achieved the designation by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures toward trees, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning projects.

“This Arbor Day, we have even more reason to celebrate,” said Alex Bilbrey, a criminal justice student at Ivy Tech, in a press release.

Bilbrey is also Student Government President and a member of the Tree Campus USA Advisory Committee.

Ivy Tech will celebrate achieving Tree Campus USA status on Arbor Day, Friday, April 26, by offering a variety of volunteer opportunities. Students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to participate in the day’s activities by volunteering their time to plant trees, remove debris from trail ways and picking up trash from the neighboring interstate right-of-way.

Indiana State Senator Ron Grooms, through a program with the state nursery, has donated 25 trees to the campus that will be planted as a part of the on-campus activities that day.

Ivy Tech Southern Indiana is the first regional campus in the statewide community college system to achieve Tree Campus USA status, and one of only five college and universities in Indiana to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation with this award.
