Kwanzaa celebration

The library will be having a special Kwanzaa celebration for the community, which is being presented by Jeffersonville-Metro Parents in Education & Global Interventions Ventures in Education (G.I.V.E.). The program director and founder is Angela Jackson-Brown. There is no cost to attend the celebration, but a donation of a can of food, fruit or nonalcoholic beverage for the G.I.V.E. pantry is requested.

Founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is an African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world. Celebrated from Dec. 26, 2013, to Jan. 1, 2014, it is a deeply meaningful and special time of remembrance, reflection, and recommitment for African-Americans.

This Kwanzaa Celebration is a multimedia presentation with hands on arts and crafts, poetry, and a drumming circle. In addition, there will be a “Karamu feast,” including vegetarian-friendly foods with a focus on healthy lifestyle choices sponsored by G.I.V.E. The program will feature our youth, who will showcase their talents by performing and presenting the Kwanzaa principles, which means first fruits of the harvest in Kiswahili, the official Pan African language.

The community is invited to come out, share and learn more about how they can become pro-active conscious citizens of our earth, and ultimately leave a positive carbon footprint. For more information, contact Jackson-Brown at or 502-345-0587.
