MLK holiday means no paper Monday

In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday, Jan. 20, the News and Tribune will not publish a print edition. Our offices in Jeffersonville and New Albany will be open Monday.

Public forum on homeless set

The Jeffersonville-Clarksville Homelessness Task Force has scheduled its first public forum at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the council chambers at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court.

The purpose of the forum is to discuss the issue of homelessness in the area and the public is invited to attend, according to a press release.

The task force was formed following the sweep of a homeless camp near exit 0 in late November. People living in the camp complained personal belongs were taken and they were not notified of the sweep. Jeffersonville suspended any additional sweeps to allow the task force to examine the policy.

Talk to a lawyer for free

The Indiana State Bar Association and Southern Indiana Pro Bono Referrals will sponsor “Talk to a Lawyer Today” 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 21 as an annual tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..

Celebrity server night on tap

A celebrity server night will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 22, at Tumbleweed, 2784 Jefferson Centre Way, Jeffersonville, to benefit Special Olympics.

Celebrity servers will include: Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden; Circuit Court No. 3 Judge Joe Weber; Jeffersonville City Court Judge Ken Pierce; Democratic Party Chairman Bob Bottorff; Union Township Trustee Greg Alexander; local attorney Nathan Masingo; Henryville Elementary School teacher Dawn Compton-Daniel; and Clark County Maj. Chuck Adams.

WAVE-TV’s Dawn Gee and a balloon artist, along with the Special Olympics Polar Bear and some Special Olympic athletes and parents will also be in attendance.

A raffle will also be going throughout the evening, and donations will be accepted. Proceeds go directly to the Indiana Special Olympics.
