JEFFERSONVILLE — A deal in place between the city of Jeffersonville and a contracted food service company has caught the ire of at least one potential vendor for April’s Thunder Over Louisville.
Steve Spellman, who has previously been a vendor at Thunder Over Louisville, offered a complaint about being required to match the price of a contracted food service company at the Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday.
Spellman said he was told last year, and again this year, that if he sells canned soft drinks and water along with the novelty items at Thunder Over Louisville he would have to raise his prices to match those of Sivori Catering because of a contract that exists with the city.
“A few years ago the Thunder committee contracted out with Sivori food services to be the master vendor of the food products ... in Jeffersonville,” said Jeffersonville Parks Director Paul Northam. “Because we have a contract with them, he is either going to have to stop selling drinks or raise his prices to be equal with what their prices are to be fair to Sivori.”
Corporation Attorney Tom Lowe explained that it is common practice to enter into a contract with a food service vendor to manage food booths at a festival or outdoor event. He said by contracting food services out you reduce redundancy of services and it allows the city to focus on management of safety and other planning matters for the event.
According to a previous report in the News and Tribune, a three-year contract is in place with Sivori Catering and a food permit through Sivori costs about $1,500. The contract was signed in 2011.
Mayor Mike Moore said Wednesday he was unaware of whether or not a contract is in place.
“If there is a legal contract that binds the city to one exclusive company...I’m obligated to honor that,” he said. Moore asked Spellman to come back at the next meeting so the city has time to review the contract.
