Clark GOP chairman files for sheriff’s race

Jamey Noel also is an ISP first sergeant

JEFFERSONVILLE — Clark County Republican Party Chairman Jamey Noel declared his intention to run for sheriff in 2014 at a party gathering Saturday.

“The citizens of Clark County need someone in the sheriff’s office who knows not only what it’s like for our officers on the street, but also how to make things work on the administrative side, too,” Noel said in a press release. “I feel my 20 years on the [Indiana] State Police, both on the street and in administration, make me the best candidate for Clark County’s next sheriff.”

Noel, a first sergeant with the Indiana State Police, serves as the assistant district commander for the ISP post in Sellersburg, and also serves as the chief of the Utica Township Fire Department, a role he has served since 1993.

Noel touts his management of the fire department, and says he transformed it from a department on the brink of closing to one of the best-equipped departments in the region, according to the release.

“Over the last several years, Clark County has seen higher tax mandates come out of the sheriff’s department,” Noel said. “It’s time to elect someone who can rein in the sheriff’s budget and invoke policies that maximize the resources we have in place to keep our community safe.”

Noel serves as a trustee of the Indiana Homeland Security Foundation Board, a post to which he was appointed by Gov. Mike Pence. He is a member of the Indiana Republican Party State Committee, serving as the 9th Congressional District chairman and the chairman of the party budget committee.

Noel is the first Republican to declare his candidacy for the sheriff’s race. He joins Democrats Brian Meyer and Donnie Bowyer and independent Mac Spainhour in the race.

Meyer and Bowyer are both employed by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, while Spainhour is a retired Indiana conservation officer.
