5:30 P.M. UPDATE: Two arrested in Clarksville shooting death

CLARKSVILLE — Clarksville police have arrested two men they believe responsible for the shooting death of a man in his Clarksville home earlier this month.

Christopher Jared Sowders, 18, of Borden, and Garreth Edward Stephens,19, of Borden, were arrested today. Both are preliminarily charged with murder and burglary, both class A felonies, and conspiracy to commit burglary, a class B felony.

Steven Baldwin, 48, was found dead on the dining room floor of his Clarksville home, located on the 2300 block of Plum Wood Drive, on March 11.

Sowders and Stephens were arrested at an apartment complex in New Albany, Clarksville Police Chief Mark Palmer said.

The two are currently being held for questioning at the Clarksville Police Department headquarters, and will be transported to the Michael L. Becher Correctional Complex in Jeffersonville later this evening, Clarksville Det. Darrell Rayborn said.

A probable cause affidavit was filed with the Clark County Prosecutor's office after two detectives followed up on several leads, Rayborn said. Rayborn declined to comment on what those leads were, and the affidavit was not immediately available.

Rayborn said Sowder and Stephens were acquainted with the victim because they knew Baldwin's stepson.

"I think apparently they went to school together at some time or another — not with the victim himself, but with his stepson," Rayborn said.

Stephens is a graduate of Borden High School. Sowders transferred to Silver Creek High School this school year, where he is a senior.

Police do not believe the murder was premeditated, Rayborn said.

"They were going to commit a burglary and probably were surprised by the homeowner," Rayborn said.

The murder weapon was not found on either suspect, and police are still investigating the case, Rayborn said.
