Southern Indiana first responders awarded grant funds

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Indiana Homeland Security Foundation has approved more than $400,000 in grants to aid public safety agencies across the state.

Awards were given to 112 recipients in 62 counties, including agencies in Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties.

The IHSF is funded through the purchase of “Secure Indiana” license plates. These funds provide grants to public safety agencies and scholarships to students statewide.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $4,000 for casualty response [first aid] kits.

The Georgetown Township Fire Protection District/Board of Fire Trustees was awarded $4,000 for a self-contained breathing apparatus dual fill station.

The Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $4,000 for a swift water rescue inflatable raft.

According to a news release from the IHSF, recipients include local fire departments, emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies.

Grants provide up to $4,000, and eligible projects include equipping emergency responders with personal protective equipment; acquiring equipment for use by emergency responders; providing radios and technology equipment; and training for emergency responders.

Examples of items that the current grant approves include protective equipment, fire gear, defibrillators, fire hoses, computer and communication equipment, thermal imaging cameras and rescue mannequins.

“This grant money allows our first responders to replace and upgrade equipment vital to daily operations,” Gov. Mike Pence said in the release. “By improving equipment and capabilities, our emergency response personnel statewide will have the tools they need to help keep Hoosiers safe.”
