JPD arrests man suspected of robbing bank

Employees said Robert A. Miles, 26, had been in the bank an hour prior to robbery

JEFFERSONVILLE — Your Community Bank in downtown Jeffersonville was robbed Monday afternoon by a man threatening to set off explosives.

No explosives were found, and the suspected bank robber was taken into custody by Jeffersonville police less than four hours after he fled the bank.

Robert A. Miles, 26, of the 200 block of Park Place, was charged with robbery, a class C felony. Miles is believed to have entered the bank located at 201 W. Court Ave. about 5:40 p.m. He was recognized by bank employees during the robbery as a frequent patron at the bank.

Police reported that employees said Miles had come into the bank and unsuccessfully attempted to cash a check one hour prior to the robbery.

Although Miles had changed clothes before returning to the bank and attempted to hide his identity by placing an article of clothing over his head, employees were certain of his identity, police reported.

During the robbery, Miles entered the area restricted to only tellers and ordered employees to the ground. Police reported that Miles then opened one of the teller’s drawers and fled the area with an undisclosed amount of money.

After Jeffersonville police Detectives confirmed Miles’ address, police went to his home about 6:30 and spoke to several people in the home. Consent was given to police to search the home and evidence pertaining to the robbery was located.

At about 9:30 p.m. Miles was spotted walking within a block of his home by police who made the arrest without incident.

Miles later confessed to Jeffersonville police that he had robbed the bank, police reported.
