News and Tribune staffers earn state awards

First place for sportswriter leads list

INDIANAPOLIS — The News and Tribune took home six awards at the annual Hoosier State Press Association Foundation’s Better Newspaper Contest on Saturday.

Staff awards were led by a first-place honor for sportswriter Kevin Harris, who won for his story, “Nash’s vision culminates in a state title for Borden.”

The judges commented, “Tremendous coverage and a clear winner. The stories and pictures put the reader in the front row for the championship run and Nash’s journey to win a state title. It was a mini version of Hoosiers.”

Other winners were:

• Jerod Clapp, third place, best in-depth feature — “Reading scores soar with Kindles in Class.”

Amanda Beam, third place, best general commentary — “The Count of Monte Sodexo.”

• Sports staff (Greg Mengelt, Harris and Elizabeth Goodman), third place — best sports section.

Staff, second place, best special section — Southern Indiana Fitness Source

Staff, third place, best newspaper design.

“Congratulations to Kevin on his deserved first-place award and to all our staffers and freelancers for their hard work,” Editor Shea Van Hoy said. “It’s great to see that effort and talent rewarded by fellow journalists from other states who are judging the entries.”

The News and Tribune competed in a division with newspapers of circulations between 6,000 and 13,999. For a complete list of winners, visit
