Man leads officers on 30-minute chase

Lengthy vehicle pursuit ends in brief foot pursuit for Floyd County officers

FLOYD COUNTY — A Corydon man is in jail after taking Floyd County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a 30-minute vehicle pursuit early Sunday morning.

Deputies attempted to pull over a 2007 Dodge passenger car driven by Douglas Alan Burris, 37, of 475 Tee Road, about 12:25 a.m. after seeing the vehicle cross the white line of the Interstate 265 ramp leading to Grant Line Road, Floyd County Sheriff’s Maj. Jeff Topping said.

The deputy activated the emergency lights of the patrol car, and Burris stopped the Dodge on Hausfeldt Lane, near McDonald’s restaurant. The deputy approached Burris in the stopped car and requested his driver’s license and vehicle registration, Topping said. As the deputy waited for the documentation to be provided, Burris sped away from the traffic stop.

Topping said Burris drove through the McDonald’s parking lot and back onto northbound Grant Line Road. Burris led deputies into Borden and on the back roads of Washington County, Topping said. The pursuit continued onto Ind. 60 and returned to Floyd County.

Topping said stop sticks were draped across a roadway, which successfully deflated at least one of the Dodge’s tires. Burris kept driving the vehicle onto U.S. 150 westbound, south on Kiesler Road and west on Bradford Road.

Near the wooded intersection of Bradford and Coen Tush roads, the vehicle came to a stop, and Burris attempted to flee the pursuing deputies on foot. Topping said Burris was taken into custody within seconds of initiating the foot pursuit about 1:05 a.m.

Burris was preliminarily charged by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving and criminal recklessness with a vehicle.

In recent years, Burris has faced similar charges.

In 2005, he was charged in Floyd County with two counts resisting law enforcement, a class D felony and a class A misdemeanor, and criminal recklessness, a class A misdemeanor.

The entire case was eventually dismissed when Burris entered a plea on unrelated charges that occurred in July 2007 when he was charged with resisting law enforcement, a class D felony, criminal recklessness, reckless driving and failure to return to the scene after an accident, all misdemeanors, and habitual offender.

A plea was entered in July 2008, that included convictions of resisting law enforcement and habitual offender. He was sentenced to two years incarceration and a three-year probation term.

Burris is also wanted on a Harrison County warrant for 2011 charges of methamphetamine possession, a class D felony, possession of paraphernalia and resisting law enforcement, both misdemeanors. The warrant was issued after Burris failed to appear for a court proceeding.

Topping said Burris may have attempted to evade deputies because of his outstanding Harrison County warrant.

On his most recent preliminary charges, Burris is scheduled to appear in Floyd County Superior Court No. 2 for an initial hearing at 9 a.m. Dec. 20.
