Memorial in Henryville to honor tornado victims

Marysville also holding event

HENRYVILLE — The parishioners of St. Francis Xavier will bless and dedicate a memorial in memory of the March 2, 2012, EF-4 tornado.

The memorial will honor the 34 people who died in Indiana and Kentucky. It also will give thanks to the thousands of people who came and helped with the rebuilding effort.

The brief service will include a blessing of an outdoor way of the cross tracing events of Jesus’ journey from Holy Thursday to Easter. The way of the cross was an Eagle Scout Project of Alex Grover, a parishioner of Sacred Heart, Jeffersonville, to help with the rebuilding of Henryville.

The granite memorial is located at the final station marking the resurrection of Jesus. The community is welcome to attend the 10 a.m. dedication, which will follow 9 a.m. Mass.

Of the 34 deaths, were in Southern Indiana. To be honored are: Joseph Babcock, 21, Moriah Brough, 20, Jayson Babcock, 2, Angel Babcock, 15 months, and Kendall Babcock, 2 months, all of New Pekin; Christianus Grovers, 72, Nabb; Wayne Hunter, 62, Henryville; and Terry Jackson, 70, Nancy “Carol” Potter Jackson, 70, Daylynn T. Jackson, 4, and John K. Poyner, 30, all of Jefferson County, Ind.

Marysville Community Center to be rededicated

On March 1, there will be a rededication of the Marysville Community Center that was devastated by the March 2, 2012, tornadoes that struck Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky.

Through the generosity of Mercury One, March2Recovery, St. Francis Tornado Relief Fund, township funds, The Americore NCCC volunteers and countless other individuals, the former Marysville grade school is again ready to serve the social needs of the community.

There will be a brief prayer and dedication service at noon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Light refreshments will be served until 1 p.m. Pictures will be displayed of past activities, the damage from the tornado and reconstruction work.
