Police say remains found in Ohio River aren't human

Officials are not yet sure what type of animal it was

JEFFERSONVILLE —

Area police responded to the Ohio River shore in Jeffersonville on Monday afternoon, after authorities received a call of possible human remains floating near the river bank.

The object was determined not to be human, but what it is has not been confirmed.

Jeffersonville Police Detective Todd Hollis said at the scene the Jeffersonville Fire Department responded to the call and retrieved the item from the water near RiverStage.

“There were concerns it might be human remains, and we were unable to make that determination, and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene,” Hollis said.

He said two officials from the medical examiner’s office responded and quickly determined the remains not to be human.

“It is definitely some type of animal, some type of organ, but it does not belong to a human being,” Hollis said. “They appear to be internal organs, several organs still connected.”

He said officials didn’t determine where the remains came from, but was first scene floating west near the Indiana shoreline.
