Theft suspect escapes from handcuffs, caught after pursuit

Clarksville officers arrest man after he freed himself from restraints

CLARKSVILLE — A man has been preliminary charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors following an incident Friday at the Clarksville Walmart.

Walmart security officials notified Clarksville police about 4 p.m. that Jason Renea Mayo, 33, of Ohio, had shoplifted from the store and was still on the property.

The security officers also told police that Mayo had previously gotten away with shoplifting on several occasions from Walmarts in Clarksville and Louisville and that there were numerous video tapes showing him getting into a silver four-door Volvo with stolen goods.

A Clarksville officer responded to Walmart and located the Volvo driven by Mayo.

The officer pulled behind the vehicle, which was exiting the parking lot onto Veterans Parkway, and initiated a traffic stop. As the officer was exiting his patrol car, Mayo began to slowly pull off.

According to the incident report, the officer could not follow Mayo because of the congestion in the parking lot, and Mayo continued to flee from the officer. The officer noted in the report that he attempted to pull over the Volvo several more times, but as he exited his vehicle, Mayo would drive off.

The officer eventually pulled in front of Mayo, preventing him from driving forward.

During the traffic stop, the officer found numerous video tapes in the passenger seat, which the officer described as being obviously stolen from Walmart.

According to the incident report, Mayo stole 21 video games, valued at $459, from Walmart before his arrest.

“While waiting for the wrecker and the Walmart security to identify the individual, [Mayo] kept trying to get out of the handcuffs, at which point I made them a little bit tighter,” according to comments written by the officer.

Mayo later complained the handcuffs were too tight, and the restraints were loosened.

“While standing there waiting on the wrecker, [Mayo] was able to get out of the handcuffs and fled the scene with myself and several other officers in foot pursuit,” according to the incident report.

The foot pursuit ended in a wooded area behind Lowe’s Home Improvement store.

The officer noted that during the pursuit and a subsequent scuffle, he received a minor injury to his right hand.

After being taken into custody a second time, Mayo was taken to the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex and preliminarily charged with theft and battery to law enforcement, both class D felonies, escape, a class C felony, and resisting law enforcement and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors.

Mayo has yet to be officially charged, but is scheduled to appear in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 for an initial hearing Thursday.
