WEATHER FORECAST: Brief warm-up headed this weekend

LOUISVILLE — After a chilly holiday period, we will at least enjoy a brief warm-up as we head into the weekend.

High temperatures are expected to climb into the low 50s in spots during Saturday afternoon. This will come with a mix of sun and clouds over the region. The weather begins to change again, however, on Sunday, when we will feel the effects of a storm system to our southeast.

This will bring some clouds and spotty rain showers. The chance the rain will increase the closer you are to the Ohio River. By Sunday night, an Arctic cold front will cruise into the area with falling temperatures overnight into the 20s. This front will also bring some moisture with it, but this time around it will be in the form of snow.

Light snow showers are expected to continue through early Monday. Some light accumulations are possible. There is another chance for some light snow as we say goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014.

With respect to river flooding, the east fork of the White River continues to recede. It reached just over 19 feet at its peak in the Jackson County area. The Ohio River continues to be watched near Tell City. It is forecast to reach very close to flood stage (38 feet) on Saturday before a slow drop takes place. A flood warning is in effect for that section of the Ohio River.
