Our Place honors those fighting against substance abuse

Second-annual Red Ribbon awards given out

NEW ALBANY — Our Place Drug and Alcohol Education Services Inc. recently hosted the second-annual Jamey Aebersold Spirit of the Red Ribbon Awards Dinner at the Calumet Club in New Albany.

While Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in October each year, the Spirit of the Red Ribbon Awards acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution toward the education, prevention, intervention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse in the community year round.

The celebration of the Red Ribbon was originally established to honor the sacrifice of Enrique Camarena, a drug enforcement agent, who was killed in the line of duty. The Red Ribbon has become a symbol of hope against the devastation and loss experienced by those affected by substance abuse and addiction.

These awards are given in honor of Jamey Aebersold, a resident of New Albany and a world-renowned jazz musician. Aebersold is a community advocate and supporter of prevention efforts in Floyd County and surrounding areas.

Drug and alcohol abuse is something that touches everyone either directly through our own experiences or those of a family member or friend, or indirectly by the toll it takes on children and families within our community, MeriBeth Wolfe Adams, executive director of Our Place, said in a news release. She said substance abuse is the one common thread that runs through so many of the issues threatening the health, safety and livelihood of so many.

This year’s award recipients are: John Kaiser, Department of Child Services; Keith Henderson, Floyd County Prosecutor; Juli Hutson, Floyd Central High School; Jill Finn, Slate Run Elementary School; and Grassroots Coalition of Clark County — represented by Mary Watkins and Jackie Love.

At last year’s inaugural event, recipients included Diane Murphy from Your Community Bank; Judge Susan Orth — Floyd Superior Court No. 1; Vince Klein from New Albany-Floyd County School Corp.; and Edwin Lee Dennis, Jr. representing Northside Christian Church.

The premier sponsor for this year’s event, which was held April 17, was Your Community Bank. Additional sponsors included Keen Screen and Callistus Smith Agency, Inc.

Our Place, located at 400 E. Spring in New Albany, serves more than 3,500 children, adults and family members from a five-county area each year with a variety of programs. Visit ourplaceinc.org or call 812-945-3400.
