Clark County buying new vehicles

Three Mack trucks, two tractors, eight police cars approved

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Clark County Commissioners decided it’d rather pay now than pay later.

Instead of buying used, the commissioners approved the purchase of three Mack trucks and two Kubota tractors.

“We did look up used ones, but buying used ones without any type of warrantee could put the county at more risk,” Commissioners President Jack Coffman said. “The price difference wasn’t that much.”

The three trucks will cost about $472,000, while the two tractors — which come with mowers — will cost about $186,000.

Coffman said the county had three trucks that were severely damaged during clean-up efforts necessitated by severe winter weather.

“We’re spending tons of money on maintenance on three trucks that are trash,” Commissioner Rick Stephenson added.

County Engineer Brian Dixon said there were used Mack trucks available for purchase, but the county would have only saved about $20,000 per truck by going used.

The commissioners also gave its go-ahead to purchase eight new police cars for the Clark County Sheriff’s Department with a not-to-exceed price of $280,000.

Sheriff Danny Rodden requested money for 10 cars, but the commissioners decided that the cost was too high.

Rodden recommended the purchase of Ford Tauruses, and the commissioners didn’t take issue.

“Our sheriff’s department researched that,” Coffman said. “They’re the ones that did the research on it, and I trust them to get the best product for the money.”

The commissioners said it’s still possible that the two cars Rodden requested but did not get could be purchased before the year’s end. “It was just to save money, that’s all,” Coffman said. “Let’s go ahead and get eight cars now, and towards the end of the year, depending on how [cumulative capital] funds look, maybe we could do a couple more. But right now, we’re just being conservative.”
