SPEAKING IN CODE: IURC sets hearings for new Southern Indiana area code

EVANSVILLE — Have an opinion on how utility regulators should introduce a new local telephone area code for Southern Indiana? Mark your calendar.

The 812 area code is reaching its capacity, and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is considering options for how to introduce a new area code.

On Tuesday, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission released a schedule of 10 upcoming public hearings to be held on the topic this spring.

One will be held at 6 p.m. March 11 at the auditorium at Jeffersonville High School, 2315 Allison Lane. It’s the only hearing in Clark or Floyd counties.

The 6 p.m. start will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. briefing to explain procedural details of the case.

The 812 area code is predicted to exhaust its supply of available numbers by March 2015.

Because of this, the telecommunications industry has filed a petition with state utility regulators asking permission to add a new area code. The petition includes seven different options, both geographic splits and overlays.

In a geographic split, an existing area code territory is divided and some customers are assigned a new area code. In an overlay plan, existing customers keep their area code and new numbers are assigned to the new area code.

The actual number for the new area code has yet to be determined, said IURC spokeswoman Danielle McGrath.
