New Albany

Montessori lottery deadline near

Community Montessori Charter Public School in New Albany is accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year for ages 5-18. The only application requirement for admission is to be a resident of Indiana.

Applications received by the lottery deadline on Saturday, Feb. 1, will be considered for admission during the lottery to be held in mid-March. A school tour/observation is required for all applications. Tours are available at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 31.

Church to show ‘October Baby’

Charlestown Road Southern Baptist Church, 2404 Charlestown Road, New Albany, will show the movie “October Baby” at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 9, at the church. Childcare will be provided. The movie is rated PG-13.

 

Hand puppet workshop is upcoming

The Carnegie Center Family Fun Workshops have been a great success and these drop-in classes in the lower level are the perfect way for families to spend Saturday morning together.  All ages have a chance to look around the galleries and are led by CCAH staff and volunteers as they create art related to the exhibits or an upcoming holiday.

At the Feb. 9 workshop, participants will be making mice hand puppets using felt, yarn, glue, wiggle eyes and pom poms.   

 This drop-in workshop is free and open to the first 60 participants, suggested ages 2-12. Registration is required and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Call the CCAH to register or for more information at 812-944-7336.  

 

Church offering Super Bowl event

Galatian Missionary Baptist Church, 2020 Maryland Ave., New Albany, is sponsoring a Super Bowl Saturday Buffalo Wing Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the church. 

Come cast your vote on the best buffalo wings in Southern Indiana. Wing dinner includes wings from each team, potato salad, celery, dressing for wings, roll, a cookie and a soda,. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children; plain wings will be available.

CPD accepting applications

The Charlestown Police Department is currently accepting applications for full-time and reserve police officers. 

Application packets can be obtained anytime at the Charlestown Police Department, 701 Main St., Charlestown. The Application deadline is 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

Information regarding the full-time and reserve positions can also be located at the police department’s website, www.ctownpd.com.

SOUTHERN INDIANA

IUS holding music auditions

The Music Department at Indiana University Southeast will hold auditions on Saturday, Feb. 2, and Saturday, March 2, for students interested in receiving a music scholarship and/or admission to the IU Southeast Music Department's music degree program. 

Auditions are held in the Recital Hall of the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center on the IU Southeast campus, 4201 Grant Line Road in New Albany. Students wishing to audition must complete an application and schedule an audition time on the Music Department's web site at www.ius.edu/music

 

National Wear Red Day is Friday

Friday, Feb. 1 is National Wear Red Day, and the American Heart Association is asking everyone to help raise awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

 

CLARKSVILLE

St. Anthony School open house Feb. 3

St. Anthony School, 320 N. Sherwood Avenue in Clarksville, is hosting an Open House for families of prospective students entering pre-school through 8th grade.  From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, members of the Enrollment Committee and other volunteers will lead individual tours for students and their parents. Guests will meet teachers and staff, visit classrooms, learn about grade level curriculum and receive admissions information, including details about tuition, financial aid for parishioners and Indiana’s School Choice Scholarships.
