Consultant hired for Jeffersonville High School yearbook

School board also discusses superintendent search

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Greater Clark County Schools Board of Trustees voted 7-0 Tuesday to hire a consultant for the Jeffersonville High School yearbook.

The board approved a contract for Camille Kalmey to assist the yearbook staff on one day per week. A substitute teacher is currently overseeing the school’s student publication.

“We put someone in there that has the appropriate licensure currently, but they have never advised a yearbook, let alone a yearbook in the middle of the year, once things have started to progress,” said Travis Haire, Greater Clark assistant superintendent.

Kalmey was an adviser at New Albany for 10 years, and Haire said she will be able to offer her expertise to the substitute teacher. Haire said there is no one else at JHS with the experience needed to advise the yearbook well.

“It’s something a little more specialized than if we’re going to do an English or a math class where other teachers can provide lesson plans,” he said.

Kalmey’s appointment was the best option for creating consistency, Haire said.

“We don’t want to miss a beat for the kids,” he said. “And this was a way to do it.”

JHS teacher and adviser Kelly Short, who has been employed at JHS since 1994 primarily in the role of a journalism teacher, was suspended from teaching Nov. 9 pending an investigation and has not been reinstated.

Last week Short filed a lawsuit over the suspension in U.S. District Court in New Albany against JHS Principal James Sexton, GCCS Superintendent Stephen Daeschner and Greater Clark County Schools. Her attorney, Dan Canon, previously told the News and Tribune that he and Short believe she was suspended because she spoke out against the school’s administration in response to new directives involving the school’s student newspaper and yearbook. GCCS officials confirmed Short was under investigation but would not comment on the lawsuit.
