NEWS AND TRIBUNE CRIME BRIEFS — For Aug. 20

Motel battery

Jeffersonville police responded to Motel 6 on Hospitality Way about 7:30 p.m. Friday after a complaint was made that a man was trying to throw the hotel’s manager from the third-floor balcony.

When police arrived, an officer made contact with Ricardo Costa Pinho Cabral Branco, 29, a resident of the hotel, who was suspected of committing the assault.

Branco was seen by the officer leaving the hotel office, and when the officer asked his name and if he had identification, Branco ignored the officer, according to the police report.

After Branco disregarded the officer’s commands, a physical struggle between the two ensued.

Additional officers responded for back up, and Branco was placed into handcuffs.

Branco told police that the hotel manager had come to his room asking for rent payment, even though the two had made a verbal agreement the day before regarding the money owed.

Branco then told police a woman from another room was a witness to the incident, and the officer should speak to her.

The woman told police she had heard from inside her room the manager and Branco talking about the rent payment. She also heard Branco begin cussing and yelling at the manager and threatening to punch the manager in the face if he did not go away. The woman stepped out of her room as the yelling got louder.

She reported Branco pushed the manager in the chest and would not let him walk away from the area by blocking his path. She told police Branco pushed the man again, this time against the third-floor balcony.

“[The woman] stated that it appeared that [the hotel manager] was being pushed over the railing ...,” according to the report.

Branco said he never touched the manager, but was arrested and preliminarily charged with criminal confinement, a class D felony, and battery and resisting law enforcement, both class A misdemeanors.
