Weekend fishing derby helps kids

D.A.D.S. of Kentuckiana Inc., a Louisville-based nonprofit will host its annual D.A.D.S. Fishing Derby at Sam Peden Community Park in New Albany. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and participants will receive their trophies at 1 p.m.

This is a free fishing derby/event for children with Down syndrome and for many of these kids, it’s the first time they’ve ever been fishing.  The excitement of a kid catching their first fish is exciting and that’s why D.A.D.S. of Kentuckiana started this event.

Along with the fishing, there will be other activities available for the kids, as well as displays and exhibits from Bass Pro Shops, Indiana and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, volunteer fire departments, American Red Cross, plus the DADS mascot, Ability the Tiger, will be there to entertain the kids.

For pre-event registration information, contact Bart Adkins at 502-445-3103 or Jeff Windhorst at 502-296-3228 or visit

Local group to receive award

Miles for Merry Miracles, a community based nonprofit foundation started and led by Southern Indiana teenagers, won third place in Jefferson Award Youth Service Challenge for the Community Building and Citizenship category in 2012. Miles for Merry Miracles works with the Salvation Army of Southern Indiana to provide children from the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program with a joyous holiday season.

The Jefferson Award is a national award, began in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard. In the realm of public service, this award is considered to be the Nobel Prize. In 2012, out of nearly 4,000 youth-led projects reviewed, Miles for Merry Miracles was selected as a winner in a group of 27 other groups on the national level.

At 4 p.m. today, Sept. 7, Miles for Merry Miracles 2013 volunteers will take a break from the day’s training to welcome Amanda Johnson, regional director from the Washington D.C.-based Jefferson Awards, who will be traveling to Southern Indiana to recognize this organization with their award. Roxanne Haley with the Salvation Army and state Sen. Ron Grooms will discuss the impact on the community and other business and community leaders will recognize this organization’s accomplishments.

The public is invited to attend this celebration at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1534 Slate Run Road in New Albany. Refreshments will be served.
