Police: Jeffersonville house fire intentionally set

Firearms found with two people dead of gunshot wounds

JEFFERSONVILLE — One of the two people found dead inside a Jeffersonville home Saturday also set the house on fire, according to Jeffersonville police.

Jeffersonville firefighters found the bodies of Morgan J. Julius, 26, and Courtney R. Grimm, 27, in the bathroom of the residence at 3001 Starview Court in Jeffersonville at about 2 p.m. Saturday. While crews were called to the scene because of the fire, the cause of death for both individuals was gunshot wounds, according to the Clark County Coroner’s office.

Jeffersonville Police Detective Todd Hollis said the positioning of the bodies and evidence of accelerants in the home’s bathroom has ruled out the possibility of a third person setting fire to the home. Police continue to investigate the incident.

“Firefighters had to force open the door to the interior room,” Hollis said. “No one could have exited the room.”

He said two handguns were also found in the bathroom. Ballistics tests will have to be performed to determine which of the guns had been fired before emergency responders entered the home and retrieved the bodies, Hollis said.

Julius is the son of Jeffersonville City Councilman Dennis Julius, who has also announced his candidacy for the 2015 Jeffersonville mayoral election. Calls to the Julius family were not returned as of press time, but Dennis Julius did post a comment on Facebook.

“I would like to thank all of the Jeffersonville fire and police for their compassion and professionalism in our family’s hour of need, as well as all so many friends for their love, thoughts and prayers,” signed by Dennis, Vicki and family.

Suzanne Julius, who has since remarried, is Morgan’s mother.

Hollis said Julius and Grimm were the only occupants of the home and that they had been a couple for eight to 10 months.

He said numerous calls were received by authorities of the house fire, but the first call to 911 was received from a neighbor who said it was too hot for him to enter the home.

Funeral services for Morgan Julius will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Clark County Humane Society and online condolences may be made at cootsfuneralhome.com

Funeral services for Courtney Grimm will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at Scott Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 and after 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Ovarian Cancer Research. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Condolences for the family can be made at www.scottfuneralhome.com.
