Area libraries increase access

Tri-county partnership allows card holders to borrow from neighbors

Lady Bird Johnson once said that “no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.”

Now, the entrance to libraries in Floyd, Clark and Harrison counties have increased their access to all residents.

Recently, directors with the Floyd County, Jeffersonville Township, Charlestown-Clark County and Harrison County libraries agreed to allow card holders who live in one of those three Southern Indiana counties to borrow from any library in the tri-county area free of charge.

“We think this will be a good thing,” said NA-FC Library Director Steve Day. “We think it will be good for the whole community.”

Before the new agreement, a resident is Clark County who wanted to check out items at the NA-FC Public Library had to purchase a card for around $36 a year. With the new agreement, the patron still has to be issued a separate card from Floyd County, but does not have to pay for it. That rule applies to all three counties.

“They will have to issue you a separate card, otherwise they would be unable to track you,” Day said.

Day said the NA-FC Public Library participated in the program 20 years ago but it was stopped because of costs. He said the library will lose some revenue from the program, but hopes the benefits offset the costs.

Residents of the three counties who want to borrow items in other Indiana counties besides the three participating in this partnership will still have to purchase a card.

“We think it’s wonderful,” said Libby Pollard, director of the Jeffersonville Township Public Library. “We’re glad Steve was willing to do this. It’s really good that two organizations can work together to come up with a program to help residents. People in both counties have been asking for this. It may be more convenient for some people who live close to the county line, to go to the library in the other county.”

There are four library systems in 10 locations in the tri-county area.
