Dedicated direction: GCCS hires athletic directors, drops teaching portion of job

Jeff basketball coach headed to Charlestown



Two new athletic directors were named for Charlestown and Jeffersonville high schools at Tuesday’s meeting of the Greater Clark County Schools board of trustees.

Chad Gilbert, boys’ basketball coach at Jeffersonville High School, was named the athletic director at Charlestown High School. Gilbert started working at Jeff High in 2000 and also served as a girls’ basketball coach for 11 seasons, taking them to the state championship in 2010-2011 season. He was also the winner of six sectional championships for the girls and two for the boys. 

Todd Satterly was named the athletic director of Jeffersonville High School. He was also a teacher and a coach for New Albany High School’s girls’ varsity basketball.

The athletic directors replace Lisa Stemler at Jeffersonville High School and Kim Carroll at Charlestown High School.

Andrew Melin, superintendent, said the positions are no longer tied to teaching contracts and positions. Instead, they’re given administrative contracts to focus on managing teams and athletes. 

He said by the time extra-duty pay, additional days and other pay factors are included, the salaries they’ll earn in administration are close to what they would have earned under the previous contracts.

Melin said Stemler and Carroll were both involuntarily taken out of their roles as athletic directors. He said though a woman was interviewed for the positions and didn’t get either job, the motivation for the removal of Stemler and Carroll wasn’t because the board wanted to fill the jobs with men.

“None of this had anything to do with gender issues,” Melin said. “It was all about trying to move our athletic departments to a higher level and those people with administrative contracts to hold our athletes and coaches to a higher level of accountability.”

Melin said Gilbert wanted to move out of the job at Jeff High to take on a new challenge with managing an entire department with aspirations of taking some teams to the state-tournament level.

Multiple attempts were made to contact Gilbert, but were not returned as of press time.

Melin said the district will post the boys’ basketball coaching position at Jeff High this week. He said filling the position by their July 9 meeting would be an aggressive timeline, but they hope to have the position filled at least by the beginning of the school year.

The board also hired two new assistant principals at Jeff High. Tim LaGrange, an assistant principal at Charlestown Middle School and former Jeff High head boys’ basketball coach, will take one assistant-principal position. He was also a social studies teacher at the school.

Charles Marshall was approved for the other open assistant principal position. He previously taught special education in Jefferson County Public Schools for five years.



With rising costs for Advanced Placement testing and ACT initiatives in the district, Melin said the budget goals for the Greater Clark Educational Foundation will shift for the next school year.

He said with ACT initiatives at a cost of $67,560 and Advanced Placement test cost coverage for high schoolers at about the same cost, one of those programs had to move out of the budget for the foundation.

But he said the district won’t eliminate the AP testing program. He said the district will take on funding that program for the next year while trying to find other ways to fund it through other methods.

He said the foundation will have to almost double its income for next year, up to $105,000. He said part of that will hopefully come through employees in the form of payroll deductions and donation campaigns.

He also said with corporate and individual donations, a golf scramble, the creation of an alumni recognition program and an expected annual donation from Bales Auto Group, he thinks it’s an attainable goal.

In other news at the meeting, the board unanimously approved a contract with Professional Education Services Group of Indiana for substitute teaching. According to the requests for proposal, the savings over using Kelly Services was about $100,000. The contract lasts for one year and puts a full-time PESG employee in the Greater Clark administration building for last-minute substitutions.
