Final arguments in murder trial may come Tuesday

JEFFERSONVILLE —

Final arguments in the death penalty trial of a southwestern Indiana man charged with setting a fire that killed his fiancee’s two children could come Tuesday.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports 37-year-old Jeffrey Weisheit’s  trial in Clark County Court had been expected to last up to five weeks, but prosecutors rested their case Thursday after just four days.

Weisheit’s trial was moved from Evansville to Jeffersonville because of extensive media coverage in southwest Indiana.

Weisheit is being tried on murder and arson charges in the 2010 deaths of 8-year-old Alyssa Lynch and 5-year-old Caleb Lynch. Prosecutors say Weisheit bound the children with duct tape and set fire to the house he shared with their mother.

The defense says Weisheit was in a depressive episode.
