Coroner makes ID in fatal crash

Craig J. Elsmore, 48, died in the wreck; second driver hospitalized

BORDEN —

The Clark County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the man killed in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon as Craig J. Elsmore, 48, of Floyds Knobs.

Elsmore, the only occupant in the vehicle, was driving along Ind. 60, near the Clark County Landfill at about 2:30 p.m. when another vehicle came across the center line and struck his 1998 Dodge Ram pickup, the coroner’s office released in a statement.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elsmore’s vehicle was struck by an oncoming 2010 Honda Civic driven by Mark Robinson, 18, of Key West, Fla., and occupied by a passenger. Both drivers were reported to have been wearing a seatbelt.

According Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Robinson drove the Civic across the center line while using a cell phone. A responding deputy found that the airbags of Robinson’s Civic deployed during the accident and found Robinson lying on the road being attended to passerbys.

Robinson’s condition has not been released, but officials have said he was taken to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

The deputy also found the passenger of the Civic, “standing and walking around” near the wreckage, which included the Dodge Ram flipped upside down, where Elsmore was pinned inside.

“[The passenger], at this time, stated that [Elsmore’s vehicle] crossed the center line striking them,” according to the accident report. “[The passenger] later changed his story and stated that [Robinson] and him were looking at a text on a cell phone when they went left of center colliding with [Elsmore’s vehicle],” according to the report.

The report continues that witnesses at the scene stated that Robinson’s vehicle ran them off the road after going left of center.
