Floyd Central Thriftway headed toward closure

Sunday expected to be retail outlet’s last day

EDWARDSVILLE — A longtime Floyd County business will soon be closing.

Floyd Central Thriftway, whose street address is 1042 N. Luther Road, Georgetown, could close as early as Sunday according to a 21-year employee of the grocery store who wished to remain anonymous.

She said employees were told the store was going to close Jan. 11. She also said Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) located in Kansas City, Kan., holds the lease to the store and is looking for a buyer. If a buyer is not found in the next few days, the store will close.

AWG serves more than 1,900 retail member stores, according to its website. Through an extensive distribution network and eight distribution centers, including one in Nashville, Tenn., AWG and its subsidiaries deliver to more than 2,500 retail outlets in 24 states.

The store, which is located near the Georgetown/Edwardsville exit off Interstate 64, sits in the Edwardsville Gateway area, which is one of the main corridors of the county. The Edwardsville Gateway Project, a project of the Floyd County Commissioners, recently studied ways to develop the area while keeping its rural setting. The final study has not been completed.

Floyd County Commissioner Chuck Freiberger said he is going to miss the store.

“I enjoyed going into the store and doing grocery shopping there,” he said. “It is a nice country store and the people are very nice there.”
