Church hosting wing cook-off benefit on Super Bowl Sunday

Galatian Missionary Baptist Church, 2020 Maryland Avenue, New Albany, is sponsoring a Super Bowl Saturday Buffalo Wing Cook-off, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Feb. 2, at the church. 

Come cast your vote on the best buffalo wings in Southern Indiana. Wing dinner includes wings from each team, potato salad, celery, dressing for wings, roll, a cookie and a soda,. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Plain wings will also be available.


Archbishop to visit St. Mary of Knobs on Tuesday

The Most Rev. Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., the recently appointed and installed archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, will visit the New Albany Deanery on Tuesday, Jan. 29. 

Archbishop Tobin will celebrate the Eucharist for all members of the deanery at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, 3033 Martin Road, Floyds Knobs, at 7 p.m. This visit coincides with the observance of Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 28-Feb. 1.

A reception in the parish hall will follow the liturgy. All are welcome to come celebrate and greet the new archbishop.

Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana is hosting Bone Marrow Registry Drive, 3 to 7 p.m., Feb. 7, at Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana, 1850 State St., New Albany.

Dessert auction upcoming

American Legion Auxiliary William Zeb Longest Unit 42 and American Legion Post 42, Floyds Knobs, will sponsor a dessert auction, 2 p.m., Feb. 9, at the post home, 4530 Paoli Pike, Floyds Knobs.

Dessert check-in and entry exhibit begins at 12:30 p.m. Cash prizes to the top three entries will be determined by highest winning bid prices.

Jeff UEZ offering scholarships

Jeffersonville’s Urban Enterprise Zone is offering two types of scholarships to local students.

Two scholarships of $5,000 each, for one year, will be available for traditional four-year, full-time college students; and up to five scholarships of $2,000 each, for one year, will be available for nontraditional students.

Eligibility requirements include that the individuals must be a resident of the Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Zone; be accepted to a nationally accredited institution for higher education; a preference will be given to those with financial need — those with a median household income less than $40,325; a minimum 2.5 GPA in high school or post-secondary institution; have a GED score of 450 or higher; traditional students must be less than one year out of high school or less than one year since receiving their GED; non-traditional students must have a minimum of 30 credit hours toward their degree; students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA while on scholarship; and the student cannot posses a bachelor’s degree.
