Clarksville police arrest two on drug charges

Firearm, methamphetamine precursors found in vehicle

CLARKSVILLE — Clarksville police say they found a New Albany man and woman in possession of marijuana packaged for dealing, prescription pills and a slew of materials to produce methamphetamine outside of America’s Best Inn Saturday.

Josh R. Cardwell, 28, and April Gibson, 24, both of 225 Village Green Drive, each face 10 drug-related preliminary felony charges following the incident.

Clarksville Police Department reported that two officers were conducting foot patrol at the motel on Eastern Boulevard when they saw a 2013 Chevrolet with expired plates enter the parking lot without using a turn signal. As the officers walked to the vehicle, Cardwell, the driver, exited it.

“ ... as soon as he [Cardwell] opened the door, I immediately smelled an odor commonly associated with marijuana; it smelled like green marijuana,” the officer put into the police report.

Cardwell and Gibson were then told by police to go to the rear of the vehicle.

When Gibson stepped from the vehicle, the officers reported finding a burnt marijuana cigarette lying in the center console and three pills on top of the dashboard, according to the report.

One of the officers then approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, “where I immediately noticed there was an object wrapped up in a sock, and you could make out the outline of a pistol in the sock,” according to the officer’s remarks in the report.

The firearm was identified as a Raven Arms automatic, .25-caliber pistol.

“I also found a glass mason jar underneath of the passenger seat, which did test positive for crystal methamphetamine,” according to the report.

Officers then searched the vehicle’s trunk, which officers reported also reeked of marijuana.

Police found in the trunk an orange cooler that contained “ ... 12 individually wrapped bags of marijuana inside the of the cooler with a total weight of 337 grams,” according to the report.

A second mason jar was found in the trunk with “ ... some type of clear liquid in it ...” police reported.

Another item officers found in the trunk was a green, metal ammunition box containing paraphernalia; lithium batteries; a trash bag containing acid; 47 green and yellow Xanax pills; blue, oval pills; and a syringe, according to the police report.

The Indiana State Police were called to safely process and extract the methamphetamine precursors.

The vehicle was determined to be property of Coyle Chevrolet, and police reported the vehicle was provided to Cardwell, as his vehicle was in a shop being serviced.

Police reported there was heavy damage around the exterior of the vehicle and it appeared to have been crashed, “ ... possibly numerous times ...”

Cardwell and Gibson have each been preliminarily charged with dealing in methamphetamine, dealing in narcotic drug and manufacturing methamphetamine, all class A felonies; possession of a controlled substance, a class C felony; dealing in marijuana more than 30 grams, possession of marijuana more than 30 grams, possession of legend drug, possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a common nuisance, all class D felonies.

Cardwell was also preliminarily charged with possession of a precursor with a firearm, a class C felony. Gibson was also preliminarily charged with possession of a precursor, a class D felony.
