Special prosecutor to investigate Jeff mayoral primary

Absentee ballots again the issue in Clark County

JEFFERSONVILLE — A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate alleged improprieties in the 2007 Jeffersonville mayoral primary.

The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Jeffersonville Mayor Rob Waiz, which alleges various election laws relating to absentee ballots were violated during the May Democratic Party primary.

Waiz was defeated in that primary by now mayor-Elect Tom Galligan, who’s scheduled to take office next month after winning last month’s general election.

Clark County Prosecutor Steve Stewart filed a petition to appoint a special prosecutor on Thursday, noting that his wife has worked for the Waiz administration since the current mayor took office in 2004.

Clark Circuit Court Judge Daniel F. Donahue signed an order appointing Ronald Simpson, a senior prosecutor out of Corydon, to investigate the case.

Court records show that Waiz filed his complaint in October. However, he said, it was filed in August.

He hired a private investigator, who compiled a report on the election. Waiz submitted that report to the prosecutor when making the complaint. The mayor was reluctant to comment too much on the investigation until after he speaks to the special prosecutor about what he’s allowed to release, he told The Evening News and The Tribune on Friday.

He said that he talked to several state agencies prior to calling for an investigation.
