Jeff council overrides salary vetoes

The Jeffersonville City Council voted Friday to override salary-ordinance vetoes issued by Jeffersonville Mayor Rob Waiz. With the vetoes, city officials will receive raises next year.

Waiz had vetoed the salary ordinances earlier this week, calling the raises that were included an undue burden on the city’s budget. Two veto overrides were issued during Friday’s special council meeting. The first vote was to override Waiz’s veto on the appointed officials’ salary ordinance — it passed by 6-1, with Councilman Ron Grooms dissenting.

The second vote was to override Waiz’s veto on the elected officials’ salary ordinance — it passed 5-2. Dissenters on that vote were Councilman Nathan Samuel and Grooms.

Under the elected officials’ ordinance, the mayor’s annual salary will go up about 34 percent, from $62,481 to $84,000. The clerk-treasurer’s salary will go up by about 12 percent, from $58,244 to $65,250. Council salaries will increase from $9,762 per person to $12,000, a boost of about 23 percent.

Following the vote, Councilman Keith Fetz asked Grooms and Samuel if they would be donating their extra pay to a charitable cause since they voted against the ordinance. Grooms said he had no comment on that, calling it an unfair question. The vote included numerous items, he said.

Councilman John Perkins, who introduced the salary ordinances, said in an interview earlier this week that the raises were justified because the city is about to grow with an upcoming annexation.

Waiz and Perkins are on their way out of office at the end of the month. They were defeated by challengers in May’s primary.

• The council amended the appointed officials’ salary ordinance to include a new emergency-management position. The job will pay about $30,000 and was budgeted earlier this year.
