Clark County Animal Control Officer Mike Ettel on unpaid leave

Moore: Zero tolerance from here on out

Clark County Animal Control Officer Mike Ettel will begin serving a two-week unpaid suspension Wednesday after being formally charged with a crime, according to county Commissioner Mike Moore.

Ettel, 52, was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in the county truck assigned to him by animal control. He was pulled over by an Indiana State Police trooper March 5 at 1:45 a.m. on Salem Church Road at Tunnel Mill Road in Charlestown when the officer noticed his license plate light was not working.

Moore and fellow commissioner Les Young spoke Saturday and decided on the suspension, Moore said.

Moore said Ettel also will be required to attend a driving under the influence diversion program.

“There will be no more driving that truck to anything other than work, and there will be zero tolerance from here on out,” Moore said.

Ettel has been suspended with pay since his arrest, according to Commissioner Ed Meyer. The county truck is now in the control of the commissioners. Moore said Ettel has two part-time assistants — his brothers — who are filling in for him.

Ettel faces charges of class A misdemeanor operation of a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person and two class C misdemeanors of operating while intoxicated.

A class A misdemeanor carries a possible sentence of up to one year in jail and as much as a $5,000 fine. A class C misdemeanor is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and as much as a $500 fine.
