‘Hop’ to it Friday: Spring Street shops to host beer tasting event

Jeffersonville’s Main Street Inc. is betting that sips of suds will bring shoppers to Spring Street.

The organization’s inaugural “Hops & Shops” — a beer-tasting event — is scheduled between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday. Several regional brewers will set up tasting areas inside Spring Street shops. A few area wineries also are participating.

Residents pay $15 in advance or $20 the day of the event to register, get a wristband that identifies them as being more than 21 years old and can visit each shop for a sample. The cost covers all drinks and appetizers that will be served. Live music will be played at several spots along the street.

Jay Ellis, executive director of Main Street Inc., said the event is designed to introduce people to downtown shops, especially as the shopping season looms.

“And they can have some fun doing it,” he said.

Bloomington-based Upland Brewing Co., Louisville’s Bluegrass Brewing Co. and Cumberland Brewing Co., and New Albany’s New Albanian Brewing Co. are among brewers expected to attend. If all this sounds familiar, it’s because the organization hosted a similar event, called Wine Walk earlier, this year.

Ellis admits that the beer-themed event is a variation of that. He said the wine walk was successful in bringing people into the downtown area.

“We expected to have 200 or so,” he said, “500 people came out for that. It just exceeded our expectations.”

Shop after shop reported that they’d seen a lot of new faces after the wine walk.

Of course, when it comes to serving alcohol in public, there are state laws to consider. Ellis notes that visitors have to finish their sample in the shop in which it was poured, with no taking of drinks from place to place.

Additionally, before getting started, they have to show identification at the registration tent, which will be located at the public garden at the corner of Spring and Chestnut streets.
