CRIME BRIEFS: Man found huffing vapors

CLARKSVILLE —

Clarksville police responded to a call about 2 p.m. Sunday of a man lying in a grassy area outside of Walmart along Veterans Parkway.

When police arrived they found Shannon L. Burris, 39, of Corydon, sitting on a concrete curb between two storage pods.

He was found in possession of two cans of dust cleaner. One of the cans was empty and the other was full.

Police reported Burris smelled of alcohol, his eyes were red and his “pupils were pinpoint.”

“He seemed to be confused at the time,” according to the report.

Police then administered two field sobriety tests, both of which Burris failed. He then returned a .17 blood-alcohol content during a portable breath test.

Burris was preliminarily charged with inhaling toxic vapor and public intoxication, both class B misdemeanors.

According to the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, huffing chemicals can result in a variety of sensory and psychological disorders.

Huffing of some inhalants can lead to cellular death in the cerebral cortex that can cause permanent personality changes, memory impairment, hallucinations and learning disabilities, according to the organization’s website.

DOMESTIC BATTERY ARREST

Jeffersonville police arrested a man at his home Sunday after responding to a battery call.

After arriving at the home in the 700 block of Chestnut Street in Jeffersonville, the officer spoke with a woman who claimed Gary Crawford, 57, assaulted her in and outside of the residence.

Crawford was later preliminarily charged with domestic battery.

The woman said that she had a verbal argument with one of her female roommates and while gathering her belongings and preparing to leave the home, the argument continued between the women.

She reported to police the argument was interrupted by Crawford coming into the area from a bedroom.

“[The woman] stated that Crawford carried her outside and threw her off the porch,” police reported.
