Community names 40 ‘Giants in the Faith’ to honor

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

So stated Sir Isaac Newton, who was not only a famed English mathematician but a Christian with a passion for studying the Bible. And this year’s 40 honorees at Hope Southern Indiana’s Giants in the Faith community celebration have provided shoulders of strength and vision for members of the public who submitted them for having had an impact on their Christian faith.

The community is invited to enjoy their stories and honor God and them at the eighth annual Giants in the Faith luncheon and celebration from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, at Huber’s Plantation Hall in Starlight. Doors will open at 1, and free activities will be offered afterward in the Family Farm Park there, along with free drink refills until 6 p.m. for those who attend Giants.

Submitted by husbands, wives, children, in-laws, co-workers and friends, this year’s Giants come from 18 churches of various denominations. Their stories, humility, and significant ways of touching others will punctuate the afternoon of food, fellowship and inspiration.

The News and Tribune is the title sponsor of Giants in the Faith. Supporting sponsors are Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes and First Harrison Bank. All three have sponsored the event since it began in 2007.

HONOREES

Since early May, people have responded to Hope Southern Indiana’s public invitation to submit — not nominate, since all those submitted are honored — those whose actions and deep faith have had an impact that others may want to emulate. The afternoon honors those who specifically do not seek that spotlight but whose stories and actions glorify God and His presence in so many ways, according to Christine Harbeson, executive director of Hope Southern Indiana.

The 2014 honorees, who live or worship in Floyd County, are: Kathy Anderson and Fritz McCauley of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian; Ken and Ruth Ann Bandy, Ron and Mary Beth King, Tom and Debbie Ogden, and Debbie Smith of Wesley Chapel United Methodist; Tim and Helen Bohannon, Tim Crockett, Auggie and Carol Hinz, and Milt and Trudy Wehrenberg of Grace Lutheran; Holly Braden of Centenary United Methodist; Eloise Carlisle, Ruth Heideman, Dr. Bill Hockman, and Brenda Masden of Northside Christian; Jeannie Duley of Silver Street United Methodist; Marjorie Finney, Jaci Owen, Elizabeth Prince, and Terri Ann Sumner of St. John Presbyterian; Diane Fischer of St. Mary’s Navilleton; Michael Grantz of Faithpoint United Methodist; Tonye Rutherford of Emmaus Road; Ron and Donna Schad of Graceland Baptist; Alice Schleicher of Atkins Chapel United Methodist; Juanita Schmitt of Trinity United Methodist; Bill Smith of St. Mary of the Knobs; Sandy Sorrells of Crossing Christian; Pastor Otis Taylor Jr., and Apostle Ella Taylor, Lamb of God Healing Ministries; DeVonne T. Whiting of New Dimensions Christian; and Mark Seabrook and Thomas Yost of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

It’s obvious that God uses these behind-the-scenes servants to reach others, Harbeson said. She hails the celebration as an opportunity for people of all ages and denominations to come together “to encourage each other and celebrate the power of God’s movement in our lives.”
