Victims identified in fatal Clarksville collision

Three involved, one killed

CLARKSVILLE — Clarksville police have released the names of the three people involved in an accident Tuesday that killed a Charlestown man.

Lee Thomas Byerly Jr., 75, was pronounced dead at University of Louisville Hospital following the accident that occurred about 3:15 p.m. on Veterans Parkway near Target store.

Police reported the victim was taken for treatment, although his pulse was not found by first responders at the wreck scene.

Byerly drove a Volkswagen Beetle across a median and struck an oncoming Toyota passenger car, according to police.

Officials reported an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

The Toyota was occupied by a wife and husband, Jeaqnnette Mount, 61, and Mountie Mount, 81, of Scottsburg.

The Mounts were taken to U of L Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Reports were provided to police that Byerly had been driving the Volkswagen erratically and bouncing off roadside curbing before crossing over the median.

It remains unclear why the Byerly drove the vehicle recklessly, police reported.

The autopsy will help officials determine if he suffered a medical issue behind the wheel, or if substances had impaired his driving.
