Man dies in wreck on Clark Memorial Bridge

Accident shuts down bridge for about three hours

— The Clark Memorial Bridge was closed for about three hours Wednesday after a fatal three-vehicle crash.

The wreck — which was reported just before 4 p.m. Wednesday — occurred in the middle of the bridge and involved a dump truck, a Chevrolet Impala, which received minor damage, and a Pontiac Sunfire, which suffered heavy damage.

Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Jackie Miller said the two cars were headed northbound into Indiana and the dump truck was traveling southbound. Miller said the Sunfire, driven by a man, apparently crossed the center line on the bridge, hit the dump truck, spun out and clipped the Impala. Police do not know why the driver crossed the center line.

There were no passengers in any of the vehicles involved.

The Sunfire’s driver was extracted from his car and taken to University of Louisville Hospital, according to Maj. Kenny Kavanaugh with the Jeffersonville Police Department. The man later died of his injuries, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department. His name was not available as of press time.

Police also had not released the names of the other people involved in the accident. The female driver of the Impala and a male driving the dump truck walked away from the accident.

The bridge reopened at about 6:45 p.m.
