KELLY: Locals make all-state squad

Two Floyd Central players were honorable-mention All-State selections following this year’s All-District Showcase games in Indianapolis.

Junior Jordan Adams and senior Nikki Korte, two of the area’s leading lights in the fall, were part of the boys’ and girls’ District 5 teams, which held their own against some strong opposition.

The All-District teams, chosen by the Indiana Soccer Coaches’ Association, also featured seniors Ben Hughes (Providence) and Dylan Abrahamson (Jeffersonville). Goalkeeper Drew Mattingly (Christian Academy of Indiana) made the team but could not take part due to injury, while New Albany’s Stephan Kossis and Providence’s Nathan Marshall were chosen as alternates.

The District 5 boys’ players finished with three ties for the weekend, which included games against the Carmel/Indy and Evansville/Bloomington districts.

Adams, who scored 29 goals in 18 games for the Highlanders — thus breaking the single-season scoring record at Floyd Central previously held by Brad Senn — said it was a good experience and fun to play against players from around the state.

"I was glad to play with other players from the area and that our district was able to compete in all of our games,” he said. “I hope to have a chance to play again next year.”

Coaches nominated players by submitting profiles in advance of their district meetings in October, and every member coach in attendance had the opportunity to present and promote any players from their roster who are listed on the district ballot.

Each district selects 18 first-team and 12 second-team players. From this list, the top 18 junior and senior players are offered roster positions for the teams that competed against each other in Indianapolis.



FLY OVER TO ADULT LEAGUES

One way to keep the chill away this winter — and to keep fit — is to get involved in the adult leagues held at Mockingbird Soccer Club in Louisville six nights a week.

There are four men’s leagues, two coed leagues and one women’s league, which will commence at different times in December, January and February. Each team plays five field players and one goalie on the field during the game. Games consist of two 24-minute halves, and each league lasts about two months, depending on the number of teams that enter.

Players must be at least 18 years old, and already 30 years old to play in the “Over 30” league.

If you are not part of a team, you can register as an individual by getting on the “free agent” list.

IU REACHES FINAL EIGHT

Indiana University soccer fans out there (and I know there are a few in the area) are looking forward to this Saturday’s NCAA Division I tournament quarterfinal at 5 p.m. against the No. 3 seed, St. John’s Red Storm.

Indiana (14-6-3) has made it thus far in the tournament thanks to victories over St. Louis (2-0) and No. 14 Michigan (3-0). Hoosier coach Mike Freitag’s charges, the No. 6 seed, will travel to New York to take on Red Storm, who advanced with a 3-2 win over UC Irvine.

The three other quarterfinal matchups will see title holders Wake Forest playing South Florida, Creighton taking on Maryland, and Northwestern battling against North Carolina.
