COLLEGE BASEBALL: Astle shuts down IU in first career start

Hoosiers top Xavier, 3-1

BLOOMINGTON — In his first career start at Xavier, former Jeffersonville ace Trent Astle allowed just two hits in five shutout innings in Indiana’s home opener at Kaufman Field on Wednesday.

Astle got a no-decision after the Hoosiers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Alex Westrick to defeat the Musketeers 2-1.

Astle struck out two and walked just one in his five-inning stint as Xavier fell to 5-4 after dropping their fourth decision in the last five games.

Astle and the Musketeers, who have yet to have their home opener, were on the bus to Atlanta for a three-game series beginning with Georgia State Wednesday night. Therefore, Astle was not available for comment.

Astle, who led Jeff to Hoosier Hills, sectional and regional championships last spring, was 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in three relief appearances prior to Wednesday’s start.

The Hoosiers, who are 5-5 after their fourth straight victory, took advantage of a Xavier error before a Casey Rodriguez RBI double gave them the lead for good in the seventh.

Xavier scored a run in the eighth on a Patrick Jones RBI single on a full count, but the Musketeers left Jones stranded when reliever Luke Harrison got Stephen Schoettmer to fly out to end the threat.

Harrison threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save. Indiana starter Kyle Hart earned the victory after seven shutout innings in which he scattered four hits. Hart is 1-1 on the season.

Westrick took the loss and is 0-2 in 2014.
