ROUNDUP: Floyd Central tennis defeats CAL, 4-1

Hornets improve to 3-1 with 5-0 victory over Salem

FLOYDS KNOBS —  The Floyd Central girls’ tennis team swept both doubles position to defeat Christian Academy of Louisville on Friday at the Floyd Central courts, 4-1.

At No. 1 doubles, the Highlanders’ tandem of Whitney Batliner and Dana Frank prevailed, 6-1, 6-0. Floyd Central’s Erin Patterson and Alex Jamison won at No. 2 doubles over Claire Coulter and Sydney English, 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 1 singles, Floyd Central’s Olivia Boesing downed Ellie Gerlach, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The Highlanders’ Christine McCaffrey was the victor at two singles, 6-0, 6-1.

NEXT: Floyd Central (3-3) at Silver Creek, Monday.

• Henryville sweeps Salem: Host Henryville won four matches in straight sets to defeat Salem on Friday, 5-0.

Winning in singles action for the Hornets were Jordan Jeffers at the No. 1 position, Shelby Sinn at No. 2 and Natalie Bobay at No. 3. Doubles winners for Henryville were Alicia Lindley and Sarah Johnson at the No. 1 spot and Marisa Thomasson and Kendra Tanner at No. 2.

NEXT: Henryville (3-1) will host Austin, Monday.

BASEBALL

• Bulldogs fall at Jasper: Class 4A No. 8 New Albany suffered a 13-5 loss at Class 3A No. 3 Jasper on Friday, 13-5.

The Bulldogs’ Logan Striegel and Jack Shine each collected two hits, while teammate Shane Robison drove in two runs. New Albany freshman A.J. Nixon was the losing pitcher in relief.

The Bulldogs suffered another injury as starting pitcher Brandon Johnson twisted his ankle. New Albany has already lost ace pitcher Josh Rogers for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow. The Bulldogs also are without senior Zach Worrall until mid-May because of torn ligaments in his wrist.

NEXT: New Albany (6-3) at Pleasure Ridge Park, Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

• Hornets blank South Central: Henryville picked up its second Southern Athletic Conference victory by beating visiting South Central in five innings on Friday, 10-0. Hornets’ pitcher Ashtyn Kaskie got the win, upping her record to 4-0.

NEXT: Henryville (5-3, 2-0 SAC) at Crawford County (DH), today.

BOYS’ TRACK

• Jeff’s Dowdell wins twice at NA Relays: On Thursday, Jeffersonville senior Tyrell Dowdell was the only area athlete to win two events in the New Albany Relays at Buerk Field. Dowdell won the 200-meter dash and the 400.
